Variable Capacitance Diode is a special semiconductor device that uses reverse bias to change the capacitance characteristics of the PN junction, thus achieving the tunability of capacitance.
Definition and characteristics
Definition: A varactor diode is a semiconductor diode that adjusts its junction capacitance by changing the reverse bias voltage. It is equivalent to a variable capacitor, and the PN junction capacitance between its two electrodes decreases with the increase of the reverse voltage.
Characteristic: The relationship between the reverse bias voltage and junction capacitance of a varactor diode is nonlinear. When the reverse voltage increases, the depletion layer widens, resulting in a decrease in capacitance; Conversely, when the reverse voltage decreases, the depletion layer becomes narrower and the capacitance increases.
application area
Automatic frequency control (AFC): Varactors are widely used in automatic frequency control circuits to change the frequency of oscillators by adjusting their capacitance, thereby maintaining consistency with the frequency of the received signal.
Scanning oscillation: In the scanning oscillation circuit, the varactor diode can generate a signal with a frequency that varies over time, which is used for scanning functions in radar, ultrasound, and other devices.
Frequency modulation and tuning: Varactor diodes are also used in frequency modulation circuits and tuning circuits. For example, the electronic tuner of a color TV set changes the junction capacitance of the varactor diode by controlling the DC voltage to select the resonant frequency of different channels.
Packaging form
Varactors are available in various packaging styles to cater to diverse application requirements
Glass sealing: Small and medium-power varactor diodes are often packaged in glass enclosures, which provide good sealing and stability.
Plastic encapsulation: Some varactor diodes are also encapsulated in plastic to reduce cost and weight.
Gold sealing: For varactor diodes with high power, metal casing is often used for packaging to improve heat dissipation and reliability.
